Veterans, local leaders, and residents gathered in Keokuk on Thursday for the unveiling of the newly improved “Road of Honor,” a key stretch of South 18th Street leading to the historic Keokuk National Cemetery.
The project, funded by $960,000 in federal support secured in 2022, aims to improve access to Iowa’s only national cemetery while honoring the service members buried there.
City and state officials—including Keokuk Mayor Kathie Mahoney, U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, and State Senator Jeff Reichman—were joined by former Iowa Rep. Christina Bohannan, who also played a role in advocating for the project.
Mayor Mahoney called the event a proud day for the city, emphasizing the importance of honoring veterans and preserving access to the historic site. The cemetery is one of the 12 original national cemeteries in the country, dating back to the Civil War.
Bohannan noted that the project’s completion marks a bipartisan success, focused on remembrance and respect.
The revitalized road now stands as a lasting tribute to those who served and a point of pride for the Keokuk community.
