There’s potential for some corn and soybean varieties to be in tight supply next year.
“Our seed crop here in Sun Prairie looks excellent. Is it a best ever? I don’t know, but it’s really close.”
However, Jeff Renk, president of Wisconsin-based Renk Seed, says that’s not the case for many seed production areas this year.
“There’s a lot of reports in the 70 to 80%, and when a report at this time of the year comes back at 75%, the seed will come back at two-thirds.” He says, “So there’s no 100%. There’s no crop failures either, but in the central Corn Belt, there’s problems.”
He tells Brownfield…
“I think the overall crop will be more than adequate, but there will be challenges maybe with something specific.” He says, “That’s not unusual in our industry, but I think this year, with what I’m hearing on the early seed crop, I think it’ll be worse than normal.”
