The National Weather Service in Des Moines is alerting Iowans to the potential for severe thunderstorms and dangerous heat as unsettled weather moves across the state.
Forecasters say thunderstorms are possible early in the morning, with another round expected to develop during the afternoon and evening. The later round is expected to bring the greater risk for severe weather, with the strongest storms currently favored across northern Iowa.
In addition to the storm threat, hot and humid conditions will affect much of Iowa. Heat is expected to peak during the afternoon, when a Heat Advisory is in effect for portions of the state.
Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on changing weather conditions, especially if they have outdoor plans. Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and be prepared to move indoors if severe weather approaches.
During periods of high heat, limit strenuous outdoor activity when possible, drink plenty of water, and check on children, older adults, and others who may be especially vulnerable to heat-related illness.
