The National Weather Service has confirmed that three tornadoes touched down across eastern Iowa during Tuesday evening’s severe weather outbreak, leaving behind scattered damage in multiple communities.
One tornado, rated an EF1, was reported near Masonville. It remained on the ground for approximately eight minutes, traveling about 4.3 miles. Residents in the area reported downed trees, bent telephone poles, and damage to several farm buildings.
A second EF1 tornado touched down in Dubuque later in the evening. That storm moved quickly, covering 3.4 miles in just four minutes. EF1 tornadoes are capable of producing winds up to 105 miles per hour, strong enough to cause moderate structural damage and significant impacts to vegetation and power infrastructure.
A third tornado was confirmed near Onslow. While the storm’s maximum wind speeds were not recorded, preventing an official EF rating, survey data shows it traveled roughly 2.6 miles over a five-minute period.
No additional details on injuries or the full extent of damage have been released at this time. Officials continue to assess the impact as cleanup efforts get underway.
