Six people in Iowa are now facing charges for allegedly voting in recent elections without being U.S. citizens. The Iowa Attorney General’s Office says the individuals are being charged with election misconduct—a serious offense under state law.
Among those charged is Emmanuel Gathua, who is accused of illegally casting a ballot in the November 2023 election in Johnson County. Another individual, Roque Ramirez Vasquez Hancock, is alleged to have voted in Hancock County during the June 2022 primary.
Jose Lozano Munoz is facing several charges tied to elections in Sioux County. Authorities say he voted in March 2022, March 2023, and again in November 2023.
The names of the other three individuals charged have not been released yet, but prosecutors say the investigations are ongoing.
In total, the Attorney General’s Office has filed 17 criminal charges related to these cases.
Election officials say while these incidents are rare, they take voting violations seriously and continue to work with law enforcement to maintain the integrity of the state’s elections.
