A Knoxville burglary case took an unusual turn after police followed a trail of spilled laundry detergent from the crime scene to a nearby home—ultimately leading to the arrest of 63-year-old Curtis Kane of Otley.

Officers say two firearms and household items were stolen from a North Roche Street home on June 5, while the resident was asleep. A witness reported seeing a man with a small dog carrying gun cases from the area.

Police traced detergent from the break-in to a home three blocks away, where items matching the stolen goods were found outside. Kane, a relative of someone at that house, was seen walking nearby with a small dog and had a screw in his pocket that matched one found in a nearby trash bin.

He was later spotted holding another missing item and eventually admitted to entering the home through a basement window. Kane is now charged with first-degree burglary, a Class B felony.
