February is American Heart Month and Ottumwa Regional Health Center (ORHC) will be hosting an event this week that promotes heart health.

Go With the Flow Heart Health Event will take place on Thursday from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM in Conference Rooms A,B, and C at ORHC. Dr. Nisreen Yagmour is a cardiologist who will be giving a presentation during the event. Her talk will go over heart disease, risk factors, and preventative measures.

Yaghmour says a heart attack occurs every 40 seconds in the U.S. and while there are some factors that make you more susceptible to a heart attack such as age, sex, and family history, there are other elements that can be changed or controlled.

“In general, you are more likely to develop heart disease if you’re overweight, if you smoke, if you don’t exercise regularly. Also, other conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol can also increase your risk.” Dr. Nisreen Yaghmour, ORHC Cardiologist

Guests at Thursday’s event will be able to have blood pressure checks, pulse oximeter readings, and sleep quality assessments administered for free. Additionally, there will be heart-healthy appetizers for the public to sample along with recipes.
