Mary Hartwig, 54 of What Cheer died Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at Stone Cottage Care Center in Sigourney. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer. Burial will be held in Garret Cemetery in Delta. Visitation with family will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, August 21 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home.

Mary Margaret Hartwig was born March 16, 1972 to Gerald Merril Rutherford and Bonnie Jean (Barth) Hartwig in Sigourney, Iowa. Mary was raised in What Cheer and attended Tri-County Community Schools. Mary received her GED and C.N.A. Certification from Indian Hills Community College. Mary worked as C.N.A. off and on throughout life, at Pizza Ranch in Sigourney with son Skyler, at several Dollar Generals in Southeast Iowa and most recently she worked at Casey’s where she worked with daughter Julie.
Surviving are: her children Emily (Jared) Bowersox of Bloomfield, Iowa; Valerie (Bryan) Montgomery of Barnes City, Iowa; Julie (Bryan Stephenson) Hartwig of What Cheer, Iowa; Shelby (Michael) Miller of Keosauqua, Iowa; and Skyler (Taylor) Hartwig of What Cheer, Iowa; grandchildren Tucker Bowersox and Lennon Bowersox of Bloomfield, Iowa, Natalie Rouze and Kennleigh Rouze of Ottumwa, Iowa, Shaylei Montgomery of Barnes City, Iowa, Zoelynn Garrett, Aubree Cranston, Lane Cranston and Laken Cranston all of What Cheer, Iowa, Logan Miller, Lily Miller, Lyvia Miller and Lyahm Miller all of Keosauqua, Iowa, Aiyla Ray, Liam Daniels, Layla Hartwig, Rebeckah Pasco, Kinsley Pasco, Davy Hartwig, Daphne Hartwig and Copelynn Hartwig all of What Cheer, Iowa; Great Grandson Warren Graham; Her mother, Bonnie Sherer of What Cheer, Iowa; Brothers Jerry Rutherford and Michael Rutherford. Sisters Sara (Brett) Boorman, Bonnie Rutherford, Angela Rutherford, Pamela Bacon and sister-in-law, Tamara Hartwig; Stepbrothers Kent Sherer, Brett Sherer and Brandon Sherer. Several nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by: her father, her stepfather, Herbert Sherer, her brothers Aaron Hartwig and Charles Hartwig, her sister Julia Rutherford, her granddaughter Layla Miller and her grandson Herbert Hartwig and Twin Baby B.
