A Mount Pleasant man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison following his conviction in connection with a fatal shooting at a Burlington bar earlier this year, according to court records.
Kaysean Rice, 23, was originally charged with second-degree murder, a Class B felony, as well as reckless use of a firearm and intimidation with a dangerous weapon, both Class C felonies, stemming from a shooting on March 7th that claimed the life of 19-year-old Janea Osier of Mount Pleasant.
A jury trial began August 11th and concluded a week later on August 19th, when the jury returned its verdict finding Rice guilty of voluntary manslaughter, a Class C felony, reckless use of a firearm, a Class C felony, and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor — a lesser set of charges than those originally filed. During the trial, Rice took the stand and claimed he acted in self-defense at the time of the shooting.
The sentencing hearing was held September 28th in Iowa District Court for South Lee County in Keokuk. In addition to the 10-year prison sentence, Rice was ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to the family of the victim.
