Blank Park Zoo is sharing the sad news that Zola’s calf did not survive the birth.
Zoo staff had been closely monitoring Zola’s pregnancy, with many animal lovers following along through the zoo’s “baby watch” livestream as they waited for the arrival of her calf.
According to the zoo, Zola went into active labor Tuesday afternoon. During the birth, keepers and veterinary staff discovered that the calf was malpositioned and needed immediate veterinary assistance.
Veterinarians intervened after determining the calf had no heartbeat at birth. Despite their lifesaving efforts, the calf could not be revived.
The zoo says Zola is doing well and remains under observation.
Blank Park Zoo thanked the community for its concern and support during the birth and said its thoughts are with the keepers and veterinary staff who cared for Zola and the calf.
