Warren County Encourages Camera Registration

Security cameras are becoming an increasingly important tool for law enforcement, and Warren County residents and business owners are being encouraged to register their cameras through the county’s Community Camera Program.

The program is designed to help law enforcement identify locations where surveillance video may be available when a crime occurs.

Many residents and businesses already have cameras monitoring driveways, parking lots, entrances and surrounding areas. Those cameras may capture valuable information without the owner ever knowing that something recorded could be connected to a crime.

By registering a camera, property owners provide law enforcement with information about where surveillance equipment is located. If a crime occurs nearby, an officer or member of the Warren County Attorney’s Office may contact the owner and ask whether they are willing to provide relevant video.

Registration does not give law enforcement direct access to a person’s camera system or allow officers to monitor the cameras.

Security footage can provide investigators with important details, including whether a person was in a specific location, what direction they were traveling, the time an incident occurred and information about vehicles or other activity in the area. Video can also help investigators compare what was captured on camera with other evidence collected during a case.

Participation in the Community Camera Program is voluntary. Registering a camera does not require the owner to provide video if law enforcement makes a request.

Surveillance footage remains the property of the camera owner unless it is provided to and collected by law enforcement. If footage is obtained and contains information related to criminal activity, it could be used as evidence during an investigation or prosecution.

The goal of the program is to improve communication between residents, businesses and law enforcement and provide investigators with another resource when working to solve crimes.
