A University of Iowa student and member of the Hawkeye Marching Band has died after collapsing during Saturday’s Hawkeye football game at Kinnick Stadium.
Derik Phillips of Dubuque collapsed during the September 5 game. According to a social media post from the Hawkeye Marching Band, Phillips suffered heat exhaustion followed by sudden cardiac arrest.
Phillips was taken to UI Health Care and admitted to the intensive care unit, where he was placed on life support. He died Tuesday, September 8.
Hawkeye Marching Band Director Dr. Eric Bush and School of Music Director Dr. Tammie Walker said Phillips represented “the very best of what it means to be a Hawkeye.”
The Hawkeye Marching Band says plans are underway to honor Phillips’ memory during the upcoming Iowa-Iowa State football game on Saturday, September 12, at 6:30 p.m. His memory will also be honored throughout the remainder of the 2026 season.
