A meteorologist with Iowa State University Extension says Iowans should expect clouds and rain through Sunday morning, with a brief break Monday before storms return Tuesday afternoon.
The statewide average for rainfall is already at about six inches for the month. “Our normal for September is just under 3.5 (inches), so we’re definitely above average for the whole state for the month of September,” Madelynn Wuestenburg said. “Kind of the last time it was this wet in September was 2019 when the monthly total average for the state in September was 6.21 inches. It’s was the 14th wettest September on record for the state.”
Wuestenberg said Iowa is experiencing a stagnant weather pattern that’s influences by the warm weather pattern in the Pacific Ocean that’s been producing tropical storms and hurricanes. “Right now we have a ton of moisture coming in from the Pacific, upper air moisture. We also have moisture coming in from the Gulf, just the way our systems are set up right now,” Wuestenburg said, “and not a lot of disturbances to help push this system out.”
Wuestenburg said the current forecast for the next week indicates at least one-and-a-half more inches of rain is expects to fall statewide — and some ares of western Iowa may get between four or five inches over the next week.
