The historic Abernathy House will once again welcome visitors during this year’s Blakesburg Corn Carnival.

The Blakesburg Historical Preservation Society will host its Fine Art & Artisan Market at the Abernathy on Saturday, September 19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The free outdoor event will feature local artists, handmade goods and an Iowa wine tasting on the grounds of the 1892 Victorian home at 203 N. Main Street.

Six area artists and artisans will be featured, including Bluff Creek Pottery, Jessie Fisher, Jessica Fenton, Kelly Cameron Patton, Sarah Long and Steve West. Visitors will have the opportunity to browse and purchase original artwork, pottery and other handcrafted items.

Madison County Winery will also offer wine tastings and bottle sales from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wine purchased at the event cannot be opened or consumed on the property.

The Abernathy House itself will be open for tours from noon to 6 p.m. The Queen Anne-style home was built in 1892 for Moses and Louisa Abernathy and features a turret, open staircase, fireplaces, formal rooms and a wraparound porch.

The Blakesburg Historical Preservation Society has continued restoration efforts at the home, including recent work on the formal dining room. The Society says grant support from the Ottumwa Legacy Foundation and Wapello County Foundation has helped make restoration projects possible.

The Fine Art & Artisan Market is one of several events hosted by the Preservation Society throughout the year as part of its efforts to preserve the Abernathy House and share its history with the community.

The event takes place during the Blakesburg Corn Carnival, giving visitors a chance to enjoy the annual community celebration while also visiting the historic property.
