Ag eyeing lame duck session for signs of farm bill life

The president of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation says all sectors of agriculture will be closely monitoring the upcoming lame duck session of Congress for any progress on a new farm bill.

Brad Olson, who farms in Polk County, says the industry doesn’t need another one-year extension.

“We need a farm bill that’s passed for the next five years, so there’s certainty out there of what the programs are.”  He says, “It’s going to vary from member to member what’s important, but at the end of the day, we need a farm bill.”

Shane Goplin, vice president of the Wisconsin Corn Promotion Board and Trempealeau County farmer, says the inclusion of nationwide, year-round E15 is also vital for corn farmer profitability.

“All we can do is keep promoting it and keep talking with our elected officials.”  He says, “And not only our elected officials, but officials from non-corn states too, to educate them.”

He says E15 has benefits beyond agriculture.

“To give the consumer the opportunity to take advantage of some lower gas prices,” he says.

With a farm bill awaiting action in the Senate, Olson tells Brownfield, “It is Congress’s job to get it done, to work out the kinks, and come to an agreement on it.”

Both the House and Senate are scheduled to reconvene on Monday, November 9th.
