The Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce will host a free public Meet the Candidate Forum on Tuesday, October 13th at the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center, giving community members the opportunity to hear directly from candidates appearing on the November ballot, according to a press release from the Chamber. The event is presented by Freeman Kevenides Law Firm.
Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. for a social time in the Atrium, where attendees can meet candidates before the formal program begins at 5:30 p.m.
The Jefferson County Supervisor race will be featured first, beginning at approximately 5:40 p.m., with incumbent Lee Dimmitt and candidate Jerry Leonard. From 6:40 to 7:00 p.m., Fairfield Community Schools Superintendent Zach Wigle will provide information about the GO Bond measure appearing on the November ballot. The evening will conclude with the Iowa House District 87 race, featuring incumbent Jeff Shipley and candidate Tom O’Donnell, beginning at approximately 7:00 p.m.
The Chamber emphasized that the event is not a debate. Candidates will be asked questions prepared by the Chamber, with no audience questions taken. Each candidate will have designated time limits for introductions and responses, and the Chamber will strictly adhere to the schedule to ensure equal opportunity for all participants.
To maintain a neutral environment, campaign apparel, signs, handouts, and other promotional materials will not be permitted at the event. These guidelines apply equally to all candidates and attendees with no exceptions. All participating candidates will be required to review and sign the Candidate Rules and Guidelines before taking the stage.
Chamber Executive Director Mendy McAdams said the goal is to create a meaningful opportunity for voters. “We want this to be a meaningful opportunity for our community to become informed,” McAdams said. “Our goal is to provide a respectful, organized and equal platform for candidates to share their perspectives on issues that matter to our community.”
