Cardinal Community Schools is honoring the lasting legacy of Patti Durflinger by naming her as the next inductee into the Cardinal Hall of Fame.
Durflinger, a 1969 Cardinal graduate, dedicated much of her life to education, athletics and the Eldon community. After earning her education degree and later completing a master’s degree at Morningside College, she returned to her hometown and spent 26 years teaching and coaching at Cardinal.
Those who knew Durflinger remember her as an educator who made students feel welcomed and supported. Her influence, however, reached far beyond the classroom.
Throughout her life, Durflinger was involved in numerous Eldon organizations and community projects. She served on the Eldon City Council and contributed her time to TTT, PEO, Eldon Uptown/Downtown, American Gothic Performing Arts, the American Gothic House and Center, and the Eldon Avenue of Flags.
She also played an important role in honoring veterans, helping establish Veterans Day programs in schools where she taught. Her appreciation for Eldon’s history led her to co-author Eldon: Home of the American Gothic House.
Durflinger remained a strong supporter of Cardinal even after her teaching career ended. She volunteered at school activities, encouraged Cardinal students and athletes, and continued finding ways to give back to the school and community.
Her life reflected the values of service, education and commitment that Cardinal hopes to pass on to future generations.
Cardinal Community Schools said Durflinger’s contributions left a lasting impression on students, families and the Eldon community, making her selection for the Cardinal Hall of Fame a fitting tribute to a woman who spent her life serving others.
Durflinger died in April 2024 at her home in Eldon at the age of 72. Her legacy continues through the many students she taught, the organizations she supported and the community she worked to strengthen.
