A new chapter for Ottumwa’s riverfront began on Saturday, August 1, as the Market Street Landing Inclusive Play Space officially opened to the public.
The approximately 8,000-square-foot playground, located along the north bank of the Des Moines River, was designed to give people of all ages and abilities a place to play, learn and connect. Built using universal design principles, the play space features wheelchair-accessible equipment and pathways, sensory play elements, accessible swings, slides, climbing structures, a water play area, shaded seating, picnic areas and accessible restrooms.
The Inclusive Play Space is a centerpiece of the larger Market Street Landing redevelopment, a long-term effort to transform Ottumwa’s riverfront into a destination for recreation, community events and economic growth.
The project was made possible through a combination of community fundraising, private partnerships and a nearly $1.4 million Destination Iowa grant. Local leaders say the playground fills an important need by providing Ottumwa’s first destination specifically designed for visitors of all abilities.
