The Fairfield girls tennis team opened the 2026 season with a conference victory over Keokuk on Monday, August 10th, sweeping all nine matches on an extremely hot day to improve to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in Southeast Conference play. Keokuk falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
The victory is an encouraging start for a Fairfield program coming off back-to-back Southeast Conference championships. Last season’s state tournament run featured Natalie Steele earning eighth place in singles for the second consecutive year, while the doubles team of Ria Ross and Sriya Yammanur captured seventh place — a strong foundation heading into the 2026 campaign. Monday’s win also extended Fairfield’s conference dual match winning streak, as the Trojans have not lost a conference dual match since 2024.
The most compelling match of the day came at No. 1 singles, where Fairfield’s Ria Ross faced Keokuk’s Nevaeh Logan — a back-to-back Southeast Conference Singles Tennis Champion. Ross came away with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 victory in a match that lasted over two hours, with the second and third doubles matches already completed by the time Ross and Logan finished.
At No. 2 singles, Natalie Steele faced Keokuk’s Baylee Picton and had some early nerves before finding her footing, ultimately cruising to a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Sriya Yammanur was dominant at No. 3, defeating Keokuk’s Berkley Boyd 6-1, 6-1. Mareyn Dunkin took No. 4 singles over Keokuk’s London Mueller 6-3, 6-0, while Faeven Gebremariam defeated Keokuk’s Divia Kirschner and Kinzley Dunkin topped Keokuk’s Alexa Sanchez, each winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.
In doubles, Ross and Yammanur defeated Logan and Picton 8-5 in a match shortened from the 10-point format due to the length of the earlier singles match. Steele and Gebremariam won 10-2 over Boyd and Mueller at No. 2 doubles, and the Dunkin duo of Mareyn and Kinzley won 10-2 over Kirschner and Sanchez at No. 3 doubles.
A notable storyline from Monday’s match was the debut of freshman Kinzley Dunkin, who handled business in her first varsity action. All other Fairfield players competing Monday are seniors.
Head Coach Travis Dunkin praised his team’s effort in difficult conditions. “Proud of how they all showed up and battled through the heat on the first meet of the season,” Dunkin said. “It was a long hard day and everyone played great.”
