Police say an Ottumwa man assaulted an individual and gravely injured himself in the presence of a toddler earlier this month.
Juan Harland, 22, was charged with neglect or abandonment of a dependent person, a Class C felony.
On the night of July 9th, court records say Harland became intoxicated at a residence on North Weller Street in Ottumwa and attacked another person while under the influence. Harland then allegedly cut his wrists, which later required 30 staples. A two-year-old child was present during the alleged assault and self-injury, according to authorities.
Harland was arrested on July 17th and transported to the Wapello County Jail where he is being held without bond.
Harland has a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 23rd.
