A juvenile female has been charged with Murder in the Second Degree, a Class B Felony, in connection with the death of seven-year-old Jean Grey Irvin, who died in May following a gunshot wound, according to a press release from the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office.
On Sunday, May 24, 2026, at approximately 7:56 p.m., the Jefferson County Communications Center received a 911 call from a rural Jefferson County residence south of Libertyville reporting that a juvenile female had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Law enforcement and emergency medical personnel arrived on scene at approximately 8:03 p.m. Jean was transported to Jefferson County Health Center and then by air ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.
Information available at the outset of the investigation suggested the gunshot wound was unintentional, and initial public notification reflected that information. In the months that followed, deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of special agents from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, conducted further interviews and analyzed evidence gathered from the scene.
The results of that investigation established probable cause to believe that Jean’s death was neither accidental nor self-inflicted, and that her death appeared to be intentional. On August 13, 2026, a complaint was filed charging a juvenile female — who was 14 years of age at the time of the shooting — with Murder in the Second Degree. She has been taken into custody following Iowa’s juvenile justice system procedures.
Because the accused is a minor, the matter has been filed with the Jefferson County Juvenile Court Office and will proceed initially in juvenile court. The Jefferson County Attorney’s Office is reviewing whether the specific facts of this case make it appropriate to seek waiver of juvenile court jurisdiction in order to prosecute the defendant as an adult in district court. That decision will be made shortly.
“Cases of this kind are among the most difficult that a community can face,” Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding said in the release. The office asked that the privacy of those affected be respected as the case proceeds.
The Jefferson County Attorney’s Office thanked the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Division of Criminal Investigation for their diligence and care throughout the investigation, and acknowledged the assistance of the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office, Jefferson County Ambulance, Libertyville Fire and Rescue, the Iowa State Patrol, the Fairfield Police Department, Jefferson County Dispatch, and the office of the Jefferson County Juvenile Court Officer.
