The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam targeting the family members and loved ones of individuals who have recently been arrested.
According to the sheriff’s office, multiple reports have been received involving callers using restricted phone numbers who falsely identify themselves as law enforcement personnel or employees of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The callers claim that money is needed to place an arrested individual on a GPS monitor so they can be released from jail.
Officials emphasize that these calls are fraudulent. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office does not contact family members to request money for GPS monitoring or release from custody.
If an arrested individual has a bond, it can only be paid in person at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Bond payments are not requested through mobile payment apps, online payment platforms, or over the phone.
Residents who receive a suspicious call are urged not to provide personal or financial information or send money. Anyone with questions about the legitimacy of a call is encouraged to contact Marion County dispatch directly at 641-828-2220 and speak with a deputy.
