The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved more than $16.6 million in disaster recovery and mitigation funding for projects across Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.
More than $12.6 million of the funding will be distributed through FEMA’s Public Assistance program, which helps communities cover eligible costs associated with recovering from natural disasters. The money can be used for projects such as repairing roads and public buildings, restoring damaged infrastructure and covering certain public health and safety expenses.
Several Iowa communities are receiving significant funding.
The City of Rock Valley will receive more than $3 million to help cover the demolition of flood-damaged homes that were recently approved for acquisition.
FEMA is also providing funding through its Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which supports projects designed to reduce damage and improve safety during future disasters.
The City of Spencer will receive more than $3.4 million toward the acquisition of 26 residential properties damaged by flooding.
Altogether, more than $3.9 million in hazard mitigation funding was approved for projects in Iowa and Nebraska.
Other projects receiving federal assistance include repairs to park facilities in Omaha, Nebraska, road and ditch work in Missouri, disaster management expenses in Kansas and funding for a community safe room in Fremont, Nebraska.
FEMA says the funding is intended to help state and local governments rebuild following disasters while also investing in projects that can make communities and infrastructure better prepared for future severe weather and other hazards.
