Mahaska County Conservation will be closing areas of two parks starting this afternoon (July 20) for installation of fish habitat structures.
Russell Wildlife Area: The access road to Pond 1 at Russell Wildlife will be closed this afternoon (July 20) and should re-open late morning on Tuesday, July 21 when the installation of the structures is complete. We ask that you avoid the area until the structures are installed in the water.
White Oak Conservation Area: On Tuesday afternoon (July 21) park staff will close White Oak Conservation Area for installation of fish structures throughout the lake. White Oak should re-open in the afternoon on Wednesday, July 22 when all structures are in place. It is asked again you avoid the area until staff has completed the work.
The structures were made possible by a Fish Habitat grant through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Between the two areas, 80 fish structures will be installed. The structures should allow for better fish health and better fishing opportunities within the bodies of water. Again, both areas will be promptly re-opened once staff has all structures installed.
