An Ottumwa man was arrested after police determined he was in possession of a stolen motorcycle last month.

Cody Pickerell, 36, faces charges of second-degree theft, a Class D felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.

On July 3rd, court records say Pickerell had a 2014 Yamaha motorcycle and was operating it at a hotel on West Second Street in Ottumwa. The motorcycle was reported stolen, and officials say the ignition was altered so a key was not needed. Additionally, authorities say parts of the bike were removed, altering its appearance, and a license plate belonging to a utility trailer was put on the motorcycle. According to the criminal complaint, Pickerell admitted to possessing and riding the motorcycle but did not know it was stolen.

A warrant for Pickerell’s arrest was issued on August 3rd, and he was taken into custody on August 14th. When he was arrested, officers allegedly found a pipe with drug residue in his pocket.

Pickerell is currently in the Wapello County Jail where he is being held on a $5,000 bond.

Pickerell has a preliminary hearing scheduled for August 24th.
