One of southeast Iowa’s most beloved cycling traditions is marking a milestone this summer as Bike Van Buren celebrates its 40th anniversary on August 15th and 16th, 2026, inviting riders to experience what the Villages of Van Buren County are calling a weekend of Miles of Memories.
Every August, cyclists return to the rolling hills of Van Buren County for a weekend that has become as much about the people as the ride itself. Familiar faces return alongside first-time riders, drawn back by quiet country roads, genuine hospitality, homemade treats at rest stops, and the satisfaction of cresting one more hill. This year’s event honors four decades of that tradition.
Riders can choose their own experience throughout the weekend. Longer routes offer a challenge for those looking to test themselves on the hills, while shorter options allow riders to slow down and take in scenic river views, discover this year’s art bales and scarecrows, explore historic villages, or simply enjoy a relaxed pace. All routes will be clearly marked, with welcoming hospitality stops, complimentary refreshments, and SAG support available throughout the ride.
To mark the milestone, the first 40 registered riders will receive a complimentary limited-edition 40th Anniversary cooling towel, with additional cooling towels available for purchase while supplies last. Commemorative 40th Anniversary T-shirts were available by preorder, with a limited number of extras on hand during the event while supplies last.
One of the weekend’s most beloved traditions is the Keosauqua Lions Club’s all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast, served both Saturday and Sunday mornings under the big tent in Keosauqua City Park. Before riders hit the road each morning, cyclists, volunteers, families, and community members gather over pancakes, sausage, and conversation — with proceeds supporting the Lions Club’s efforts to give back to the communities riders will discover throughout the weekend.
