Iowans with an interest in gardening and community service have an opportunity to become certified Iowa Master Gardeners this fall.
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is now accepting applications for the Fall 2026 Garden Academy, the required training program for anyone interested in joining the Iowa Master Gardener program. Applications must be submitted by August 14, with classes beginning August 31.
Garden Academy will be available in 34 Iowa counties, giving participants the opportunity to receive research-based horticulture education while connecting with their local Extension office.
The program is designed for gardeners of all experience levels, from beginners looking to expand their knowledge to experienced growers who want to share their expertise with others.
Participants who are accepted into the program will complete the online Garden Academy course, attend a county volunteer orientation, and finish a 40-hour internship where they apply their new skills through community projects and educational outreach.
For more than four decades, the Iowa Master Gardener program has helped thousands of Iowans develop science-based gardening knowledge while volunteering to improve gardens, landscapes, and green spaces across the state.
