A public presentation highlighting environmental factors linked to Iowa’s high cancer rates will be held Monday, June 15, in Ottumwa.

Authors of the report, Environmental Risk Factors and Iowa’s Cancer Crisis, will present their findings from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Ottumwa High School cafeteria, located at 501 E. Second Street. The event is free and open to the public.

The presentation will focus on environmental exposures including pesticides, nitrate contamination, PFAS chemicals, and radon, and their potential associations with cancer rates across Iowa. Organizers say the report examines how these factors may affect specific cancer types and age groups throughout the state.

In addition to statewide data, attendees will receive information about Wapello County’s unique cancer risk profile and how local cancer trends compare to those across Iowa and the nation.

While risk factors such as smoking, alcohol use, and ultraviolet radiation are widely recognized, the report seeks to draw attention to environmental influences found in Iowa’s water, soil, and air that are often discussed less frequently.

Report authors will be available during the event to present key findings and answer questions from attendees. Organizers encourage community members to attend and learn more about the research and its implications for public health.
