Heat Advisory Continues Across Central Iowa

A Heat Advisory remains in effect for most of central Iowa through 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, as dangerously hot and humid conditions continue across the region. Heat index values are expected to reach around 105 degrees, creating an increased risk of heat-related illnesses for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the combination of high temperatures and oppressive humidity will make conditions especially dangerous during the afternoon and early evening hours. Forecasters also warn that the current stretch of extreme heat could continue into next week, including the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

In addition to the heat, several opportunities for severe thunderstorms are expected. The greatest threat for severe weather is across northern Iowa tonight, with much of the state facing the potential for severe storms on Wednesday and Thursday. Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware and monitor forecasts for changing conditions.

Officials urge Iowans to take precautions during the heat by drinking plenty of water, remaining in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, and checking on elderly relatives, neighbors, and those without adequate cooling. Anyone working or exercising outdoors should wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours.

It’s also important to recognize the warning signs of heat-related illnesses. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and fainting. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can cause a high body temperature, confusion, unconsciousness, or the absence of sweating. Anyone experiencing signs of heat stroke should seek immediate medical attention by calling 911.
