Residents across much of southern and southeast Iowa are being urged to take precautions as the National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning that remains in effect until 10:00 p.m. Thursday.

Forecasters say dangerously hot conditions are expected, with heat index values reaching up to 104 degrees. The combination of high temperatures and humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those spending extended periods outdoors.

The warning includes the following Iowa counties:

  • Dallas
  • Polk
  • Jasper
  • Poweshiek
  • Madison
  • Warren
  • Marion
  • Mahaska
  • Union
  • Clarke
  • Lucas
  • Monroe
  • Wapello
  • Taylor
  • Ringgold
  • Decatur
  • Wayne
  • Appanoose
  • Davis

Communities impacted include Des Moines, Waukee, Perry, Newton, Grinnell, Pella, Knoxville, Oskaloosa, Ottumwa, Bloomfield, Albia, Chariton, Indianola, Winterset, Adel, Carlisle, Norwalk, Creston, Osceola, Leon, Lamoni, Bedford, Mount Ayr, Lenox, Seymour, Corydon, Allerton, Centerville, Earlham, and New Market.

Officials recommend drinking plenty of water, staying in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, avoiding prolonged time in direct sunlight, and checking on elderly relatives, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to the heat.

If you must be outdoors, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, limit strenuous activity to the early morning or evening hours, and be alert for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which require immediate attention.
