Children and families are invited to celebrate flowers, gardening, and reading at the upcoming Petals, Pages, and Planting Event on Wednesday, July 22nd from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Agency Community Center, 102 Hazel Street in Agency, according to a press release from the Wapello County Farm Bureau.

The free event is hosted by the Wapello County Farm Bureau in partnership with the Agency Public Library and will feature story time, hands-on activities, and a guest speaker.

The afternoon will begin with a flower-themed story time presented by the Agency Public Library, where children will explore the beauty of flowers and the role plants play in the environment through books and discussion.

Following story time, participants will create their own seed balls — a simple planting method that helps establish plants with minimal soil disturbance — giving children a hands-on opportunity to learn about seeds and germination. Children will also plant their own sunflower with guidance from Wapello County Farm Bureau Outreach Coordinator Hailey Shultz, learning about the sunflower life cycle and the essentials for plant growth along the way. Each child will take their potted sunflower home to watch it grow throughout the summer.

The afternoon’s featured guest will be Rachel Irwin of Bushels and Blooms Farm, who will share her experiences as a flower farmer and small business owner and offer a glimpse into how she turned her passion for growing flowers into a local enterprise.

The event is free and open to the public. Those with questions can contact the Agency Public Library or the Wapello County Farm Bureau.
