The City of Ottumwa invites residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day with its annual public fireworks display at Ottumwa Park on Saturday, July 4.

The professional fireworks show is scheduled to begin shortly after 9:30 p.m. and remains one of the community’s longest-standing Fourth of July traditions, drawing spectators from across the region.

To help ensure public safety and improve traffic flow following the event, motorists should be aware that traffic on the Wapello Street Extension will be restricted to right turns only when entering and exiting Ottumwa Park. Left turns across the median will not be permitted during the event.

If weather conditions prevent the fireworks display from taking place on July 4, the rain date is scheduled for Sunday, July 5.

The City also reminds residents that while consumer fireworks are legal in Iowa, they may not be discharged on City-owned property without authorization. Fireworks are prohibited in all City parks, trail systems, The Beach Ottumwa parking lot, and other City grounds. Violations are punishable by fines of up to $500.

Within Ottumwa city limits, fireworks may be legally discharged on private property only during the following times:

  • July 3: 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • July 4: 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
