Both the Sigourney Savages and the Keota Eagles punched their tickets to the Class 1A District Meet on Wednesday, May 13th, finishing second and third respectively at the sectional hosted at the Marengo Golf Club at Iowa Valley — an 18-hole, par-72 layout that drew 42 golfers from seven teams.
Hillcrest Academy claimed the sectional title with a dominant score of 310. Sigourney finished runner-up at 316, with Keota right behind at 318, securing the third and final team qualifying spot. HLV finished fourth at 367, English Valleys fifth at 376, and Melcher-Dallas and Iowa Valley tied for sixth at 383.
Hillcrest Academy’s Rowan Miller was the clear individual standout of the day, shooting a 67 to claim medalist honors by a wide margin. From there, it was a Sigourney-Keota showcase at the top of the leaderboard.
Sigourney’s Ike Molyneux finished second overall with a 76, recording five birdies on the day. Jordan Tremmel followed in third at 77 with two birdies. Keota’s Brennan McGuire matched Tremmel’s 77 in fourth place, highlighted by an eagle and a birdie. Tucker Sprouse of Keota shot a 78 with three birdies to finish fifth, and Sigourney’s Solon Yates finished seventh at 79 with one birdie.
Keota’s Porter Cave finished eighth at 80, and Aspen Galindo added an 83 with two birdies to finish 10th. Sigourney’s Landon Conrad finished 11th at 84, followed by English Valleys’ Tyler Lortz at 84 in 12th. Keota’s Jacob Libe carded an 85 with one birdie for 13th place. Sigourney’s Hayden Bensmiller and Josh Wyatt each shot 86 — Wyatt adding one birdie — finishing 15th and 16th respectively. HLV’s Lance Milton also shot an 86 to finish 17th, and Keota’s Blake Baker rounded out the top 20 with an 89. All six Sigourney and Keota golfers who competed finished in the top 20 of the 42-golfer field.
Lortz of English Valleys and Milton of HLV also advance to the district meet as the top two individual finishers not on one of the three qualifying teams, joining Hillcrest Academy, Sigourney, and Keota in Monday’s field.
Both Sigourney and Keota advance to the Class 1A District Meet, scheduled for Monday, May 18th at 10:00 a.m. at Oskaloosa Golf. The district is hosted by Sigourney. The district field will also include qualifiers from three other sectionals.
From the Midland sectional, East Marshall (325), Marquette Catholic (338), and Easton Valley (351) advance as teams, with Cole Snyder of Midland (80) and Carson Newcomb of Prince of Peace (82) advancing as individuals.
From the Mount Ayr sectional, Mount Ayr (316), Wayne (336), and East Union (344) advance as teams, with Tyson Lloyd of Lamoni (82) and Blake Ewing of Moravia (86) advancing as individuals.
From the Winfield-Mt. Union sectional, Winfield-Mt. Union (321), WACO (366), and Danville (368) advance as teams, with Max Kruse of Holy Trinity Catholic (86) and Cully Fry of Wapello (88) advancing as individuals.
