Richard McCright, 89, of Ottumwa died at 11:46 a.m. February 6, 2026 at his home.
He was born October 12, 1936 at St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa to Joseph W. and Mary K. Larkin McCright. He married Dorothy Lee Parsons, on October 20, 1962.
A 1954 graduate of Walsh High School he attended St. Ambrose University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1964, having served in Korea and later in the Army Reserves.
Dick worked for John Morrell and Co. for over 10 years and for 30 years for the Iowa Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector. He farmed all of his life, having taken care of the farm that his parents and grandparents called home.
He was a lifelong member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, now St. Joseph Parish and a third degree member of Knights of Columbus Council #888. Dick took pride in being an upbeat individual and always found the good in everything. He had a kind and loving personality and truly cared about his community. Raising his four children with his wife was his greatest accomplishment and he took great joy in all of his grandchildren.
Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Dorothy; their son, Bob McCright of Ottumwa; three daughters, Margaret (Patrick) Ryan of Florida, Mary (Chris) Guevara of Des Moines and Angie (Jason) Wielgoszinski of Indiana; eight grandchildren, Maureen, Liam, Katie, Joe, Quin, Tim, Dora and Leighton; and a great granddaughter, Zoey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Gerald “Jerry” McCright; and a grandson, Owen Wielgoszinski.
Visitation will be open after 10 a.m. Thursday, February 12th at Reece Funeral Home. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home followed by a time for family to greet friends until 6 p.m. Thursday.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 13th at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military honors conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legin and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
