Students at Wilson Elementary School in Ottumwa spent the day learning techniques to better understand and manage their emotions during the school’s first-ever “Mindfulness Café.”
The event introduced students to calming strategies such as deep breathing, visualization, and emotional awareness exercises. Through interactive stations and guided activities, students learned how to recognize their feelings and respond in healthy, constructive ways.
The goal of the Mindfulness Café is to equip children with tools that promote self-regulation, focus, and emotional resilience—skills that support both academic success and overall well-being.
School staff say the initiative is part of a broader effort to address students’ mental health needs and foster a positive learning environment.
