On May 22, 1956, rock and roll icon Elvis Presley electrified the stage at the newly opened Veterans Memorial Auditorium in downtown Des Moines. Known affectionately by Iowans as “Vets” or “The Barn,” the venue hosted its first major event that night—an unforgettable concert by the King of Rock and Roll himself.

Presley arrived from Topeka, Kansas, the night before and wasted no time igniting the crowd. Opening with his chart-topping hit “Heartbreak Hotel,” Elvis sent the estimated 4,000 fans—mostly teenagers—into a frenzy. His setlist included soon-to-be classics like “Blue Suede Shoes” and closed with a powerful rendition of “Hound Dog,” earning him a thunderous standing ovation.

Years later, Elvis would serve his country as a member of the U.S. Army’s 1st Medium Tank Battalion in Germany, but on this night, his battlefield was the stage—and he conquered it with sound.
