Make the Most of Summer — and Stay Safe While You Do It

Summer’s finally here, and that means it’s time for swimming, grilling, camping, and soaking up the sunshine. But before you head out, the American Red Cross has some important safety reminders to help you and your family enjoy the season without any surprises.

Water Safety Starts with Awareness
Drowning can happen in seconds — and it’s often silent. Whether you’re at the pool, lake, or beach, always keep a close eye on swimmers. Never swim alone, and don’t rely on kids to watch other kids. Designate a responsible adult as the “water watcher” who stays focused on the water at all times. And if you’re not a strong swimmer or heading out on a boat, wear a life jacket. It could save your life.

Fire Up the Grill, Not a Fire Emergency
Grilling is a summer favorite, but it also causes thousands of home fires every year. Always grill outside, away from your house, deck, or anything flammable. Keep kids and pets safely away from the area. And don’t forget food safety — wash your hands, keep raw and cooked foods separate, and store perishables in a cooler with plenty of ice.

Camping Done Right — and Safe
If you’re heading out to camp or hike, being prepared is key. Pack a first aid kit, bug spray, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Stick to trails that match your group’s skill level, and always let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. Dress in lightweight layers, wear a hat, and keep an eye on the weather.

Be Prepared with Red Cross Apps
Want safety tips at your fingertips? Download the free Red Cross First Aid and Emergency apps. They’re loaded with helpful info, weather alerts, and step-by-step instructions for common emergencies — plus you can use them in English or Spanish.
