Project: Construction of the Mahaska County Conservation All-Inclusive Nature Playscape
Location: Caldwell Park, near the Environmental Learning Center
As part of Mahaska County Conservation’s continued commitment to enriching community spaces, construction will soon begin on a transformative new feature—an All-Inclusive Nature Playscape. This innovative project will provide accessible, nature-based play opportunities for individuals of all abilities.
To facilitate safe and efficient construction, a portion of the Mahaska Community Recreation Trail will undergo a temporary closure beginning April 23rd, 2025.
Closure Details:
- 🔴 Full Closure (Red Zone):
The trail segment from bridge to bridge within Caldwell Park will be entirely closed to the public. - 🟡 Restricted Access (Yellow Zone):
While this section will remain physically accessible, there will be no through traffic permitted at the south Caldwell Park bridge. Users are advised to respect signage and barriers. - 🟢 Detour Route (Green Zone):
A clearly marked alternate route will guide trail users through the former Vennard College campus, linking up with the established street trail access points. This path ensures continued use and enjoyment of the trail network during the closure period.

- Estimated Duration: Approximately 5 months
- Completion Date: Dependent on weather and construction progress
