On August 18th at approximately 12:36 PM, court records say an officer from the Knoxville Police Department clocked a 2013 Jeep Wrangler going 104 mph in a 65 mph zone on Highway 92 and swerving into the median. After pulling the vehicle over, the officer made contact with the driver, later identified as Sanford, and asked for his information.
When Sanford opened the center console, police say the officer saw multiple empty alcoholic beverage containers in the console. When Sanford was asked to show his license, Sanford allegedly gave the officer his credit card. The officer also noted Sanford displayed bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, and droopy eyelids. Additionally, the officer says Sanford appeared dazed and confused, had the odor of alcohol emanating from his person, and his pants were unzipped.
According to court documents, a field sobriety test was administered and Sanford showed signs of impairment. Sanford consented to a preliminary breath test and was estimated to have a blood alcohol content of 0.228, more than three times the legal limit.
Sanford was placed under arrest and the car was searched. Law enforcement allegedly found 15 Fireball whiskey beverages in the Jeep. During a personal search, police say Sanford had a green metal container in his possession that contained a green, leafy substance determined to be marijuana and a one-hit pipe with burnt, leafy residue.
Sanford was transported to the Marion County Jail and was later released after posting a $7,000 bond.
Sanford has a preliminary hearing scheduled for August 27th.
