The National Weather Service in Des Moines is warning Iowans to prepare for a stretch of dangerous heat and humidity, along with the potential for severe thunderstorms in parts of the state.
Forecasters say the extreme heat will impact much of Iowa beginning Sunday afternoon and continue through at least Tuesday evening. Heat index values are expected to climb well above the actual air temperature, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing, and check on older adults, children, and anyone without access to air conditioning. Never leave children or pets unattended inside a vehicle.
In addition to the heat, severe thunderstorms are possible across northwest Iowa late Sunday. Storms could produce damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning. Anyone in areas at risk should closely monitor weather conditions and be prepared to seek shelter if warnings are issued.
