Families with children ages five and older are invited to a free hands-on learning event at the Fairfield Public Library next month focused on the science of plant growth.
Germination in Action, hosted by the Jefferson County Farm Bureau and the Fairfield Public Library, will take place on Thursday, July 9th from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Fairfield Public Library Meeting Room.
The event will begin with a story time led by Sara Martindale, Children’s Librarian at the Fairfield Public Library, who will read books centered on seeds, plants, and germination. Jefferson County Farm Bureau Outreach Coordinator Hailey Shultz will then lead a discussion on gardening basics and the germination process, covering what seeds need to grow, how plants develop, and why gardening is an important part of agriculture and food production.
The highlight of the event will be a hands-on activity where each child creates their own Seed House and selects vegetable seeds to take home. As the seeds begin to sprout, children can transplant their seedlings into a garden or container and watch their plants mature and eventually produce fresh vegetables — offering a full seed-to-plate experience.
The event is free and open to the community. Community members are encouraged to attend and take advantage of this educational opportunity.
