A domestic disturbance reported in Ottumwa resulted in an arrest after officers responded to allegations of an unprovoked physical assault and property damage.
According to court documents, on December 25 at approximately 5:52 p.m., the Ottumwa Police Department was dispatched to East Main Street in reference to an assault.
Upon arrival, officers interviewed Michael Davis, 59, of Ottumwa.
Investigators report that Davis intentionally broke the victim’s cellphone, rendering it inoperable. The cost to replace the phone was estimated to be more than $300 but less than $750. Law enforcement records further state that Davis struck the victim in the face twice, resulting in a bloody nose and a swollen, reddened eye. Authorities determined the assault was unprovoked and unjustified.
Davis was taken into custody and is currently being held in the Wapello County Jail. He is charged with assault causing bodily injury or mental illness, a serious misdemeanor, and fourth-degree criminal mischief, also a serious misdemeanor. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 5. Bond was set at $1,000 cash or surety, and a no-contact order has been issued.
