A seemingly good deed turned into a felony charge for an Ottumwa man on Sunday.

19-year-old Drake Rios was charged with extortion, a Class D felony.

On November 23, court records say Rios found a wallet and messaged the wallet’s owner. According to the owner, Rios asked the owner if he could get a reward for finding his wallet.

Court documents say the victim offered Rios $200 but Rios requested $500 and then changed the amount to $600 in exchange for the victim getting his wallet back that day.

The victim contacted the Ottumwa Police Department and officers were present at the 2400 block of Northgate to see Rios in possession of the victim’s wallet, according to the criminal complaint.

Rios was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail. He was later freed after posting a $5,000 bond.
