An agronomist says farmers across Iowa have been working to catch up after excessive rainfall stalled early harvest activity.
“It’s definitely been slow.”
Bruce Battles, head of technical agronomy for Syngenta, is based in Ames and says there’s still a lot of acres left in the field.
“A lot more than I think a lot of people would like to see, and a lot more ruts in the field than people would like to see as well.”
But he tells Brownfield yields so far have been better than expected.
“Seems like a great performance year with soybeans. We’re seeing phenomenal performance across the board. Soybean quality has been a challenge. I think everyone is dealing with soy quality with all the rain we got.”
Battles says early reports from central Iowa suggest the corn crop is outperforming last year’s results.
