Iowa farmers are busy spraying weeds as planting comes to an end.
Mark Jackson grows corn and soybeans in the southeast part of the state and tells Brownfield conditions for herbicide applications have not been ideal.
“It’s kind of always a hurdle chasing the windy weather, especially when we have temperature spikes that we’ve been having where we’ve had the hot weather then the cool weather.”
He says abnormal heat in April pushed early weed growth.
“Waterhemp and some of those little nasty rascals that you have to get early, so I think guys have gone out a little bit early on their post spray to try to stay ahead of that concern.”
USDA says in addition to spraying, Iowa farmers are also cutting hay and finishing up planting, with corn at 97 percent and soybeans 96 percent planted.
Eighty-four percent of corn and 81 percent of soybeans are rated in good to excellent condition.
