An Ottumwa man was arrested Monday after authorities say he eluded law enforcement in a vehicle that was connected to a shooting earlier in the day.
27-year-old Dylan Dekraai has been charged with attempt to commit murder, a Class B felony.
On July 22 at 2:11 a.m, the Ottumwa Police Department says a vehicle was being driven by a gunshot victim and parked in the employee parking lot of the Department. The victim reported that he had been shot through the door while sitting in the drivers seat on South Adams Avenue. The victim sustained a wound in his hip and drove to the Police Station for help.
38-year-old Justin Reeves and was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital for critical injuries.
At approximately 4:27 PM on Monday, the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a Dark Blue Chrysler 300 on East Main Street in Ottumwa. Authorities say the vehicle belonged to an individual involved in a shooting early Monday morning.
The vehicle accelerated and tried to evade the deputy. The Chrysler pulled into a driveway at 2246 100th Avenue and came to a stop. Two people ran from the vehicle. The deputy managed to apprehend one of the runners, later identified as Dekraai, and bring him into custody.
Dekraai is currently in the Wapello County Jail where he is being held on no bond.
Sheriff Don Phillips says the investigation is ongoing and more charges are pending for Dekraai.
