An Ottumwa woman is facing two felony drug charges after a K-9 unit alerted to narcotics during a traffic stop in Des Moines County in the early morning hours of October 3rd.
According to a news release by the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 2:11 a.m., Des Moines County deputies stopped a vehicle for a stop sign violation at the intersection of US Highway 34 and West Burlington Avenue. A K-9 unit conducted an open-air sniff around the vehicle and alerted to the odor of narcotics. Deputies searched the vehicle and located methamphetamine, THC vapes, and drug paraphernalia near the passenger seat, as well as additional drug items in the trunk area.
The passenger and owner of the vehicle was identified as Karen Suzanne Milom, 69, of Ottumwa. She was placed under arrest and charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance — Third or Subsequent Offense, both Class D Felonies, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a Simple Misdemeanor. Milom was transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.
Milom is being held on a $10,000 cash or surety bond on the felony charges and a $300 cash or surety bond on the misdemeanor charge, for a combined bond of $10,300. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 13th.
