LULAC Ottumwa will host a Day of the Dead celebration on Saturday, November 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ottumwa YMCA, located at 611 North Hancock Street.

The event will celebrate Mexican culture, family traditions and the remembrance of loved ones who have passed away.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition in which families and communities honor those who have died. Celebrations often include colorful ofrendas, or altars, featuring photographs, favorite foods, flowers and other meaningful items that help preserve the memories of loved ones.

The evening’s schedule will begin with introductions at 5 p.m., followed by a performance from Ballet Folklórico Quetzalli at 5:15 p.m.

At 6:10 p.m., Michelle Garcia of the University of Iowa will give a presentation about Day of the Dead. Ballet Folklórico Quetzalli will return for another performance at 6:30 p.m.

The event will conclude with the announcement of the Day of the Dead scholarship winner at 7:45 p.m.

Community members are invited to attend and learn more about the cultural traditions and meaning behind this annual observance.
