The National Weather Service in Des Moines is warning of the potential for severe weather and heavy rainfall across parts of Iowa Tuesday into early Wednesday.

The greatest threat for severe storms is expected between 4 p.m. and midnight Tuesday. Damaging winds are expected to be the primary concern, although large hail and an isolated tornado or two cannot be ruled out.

Heavy rainfall could also create the potential for flash flooding, particularly where thunderstorms repeatedly move over the same areas.

The National Weather Service has placed portions of central Iowa under a Level 2 of 5 Slight Risk for severe weather. Portions of central to eastern Iowa are also under a Level 2 of 5 Slight Risk for excessive rainfall.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue Tuesday evening into the early morning hours Wednesday.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware Tuesday afternoon and evening and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
