An Ottumwa man is accused of coercing a child to destroy evidence linked to an active case against him.

Randy Briggs, 41, was charged with tampering with a witness (Class C felony) and interference with official acts – obstructing prosecution (aggravated misdemeanor).

On September 11th, court records say Briggs spoke to a child who is a witness in a case in which he’s a defendant. Briggs allegedly told the minor to delete video evidence related to a previous incident that resulted in Briggs being charged with child endangerment – bodily injury.

Briggs was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail where he is being held on a $12,000 bond.

Court documents show an active case that dates back to this past July. Along with child endangerment – bodily injury, Briggs was charged with two counts of child endangerment and assault causing bodily injury or mental illness in the incident.

Briggs has a preliminary hearing scheduled for September 21st. Briggs has been ordered not to have any contact with two children connected to this case, according to court filings.
